Designing Virtual Worlds

Many have heard of the metaverse, but many people treat it in the same way people treated ‘the internet’ back in the early 1990s. That is to say: they’re probably vastly underestimating how big the metaverse will one day be.
It’s already beginning to show signs of success, but that’s nothing to what it’ll be like in the future. Believers in the metaverse predict that, by 2040, we’ll be doing everything from learning to playing sports in the virtual world.
And if it is to be the success that so many people predict, then it’ll be thanks to the concept art for the metaverse that artists create. In this blog we’ll take a closer look at the metaverse and how it’ll be influenced by concept art, including some technical skills emerging conceptual artists may need in order to grab the many opportunities that this new digital frontier will provide.
A New Universe
You can think of the metaverse as a universe within a universe. And at the moment, that universe is largely unbuilt.
Concept art will be pivotal in helping to realize the full potential of the metaverse, providing a blueprint for the 3D modeling that’ll turn it into a reality (well, a virtual reality).
The metaverse presents a fascinating opportunity for conceptual artists to unleash their artistic creativity and technical prowess. After all, it’ll be up to the concept artists to create the mood of the metaverse space and make sure that it’s enjoyable to use. The most influential role concept artists will have will relate to world-building—literally creating new worlds from nothing—but they’ll also influence character design and virtual assets.
Challenges of Creating for the Metaverse
The metaverse is futuristic, and that’s part of what makes it so exciting for concept artists. However, the newness of this world means that it also presents unique challenges. In most cases, concept art utilizes 2D or 3D; in the metaverse, it’s virtual reality, which means that art must be an immersive experience where guests can explore in any and all directions.

Concept Art For The Metaverse: Necessary Technical Skills

Building the metaverse will be a collaborative effort between creatives of all backgrounds and disciplines. For concept artists to find success in this emerging field, they will need to possess extensive creative excellence and robust technical capabilities. For instance, knowing how to use 3D tools, which the majority of assets that end up in the metaverse begin as 3D models. Understanding how materials and textures can be utilized in the metaverse, as well as having some experience with virtual reality design will also help.
