Creating Cinematic Narrative Illustrations – Murat Gul
IMPORTANT INFORMATION — ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO REFUNDS OR TRANSFERS OF WORKSHOPS
THE WORKSHOP WILL NOT BE RECORDED
Workshop Project
The Keeper of Crows
Project Type
Narrative / cinematic fantasy illustration
Core Idea
The workshop project will focus on creating a cinematic dark fantasy illustration of a lonely giant who has made an abandoned stone tower his home. Although intimidating in appearance, the giant should feel quiet, reflective, and deeply isolated rather than aggressive. His only companions are ravens, dead trees, stone ruins, and the silence around him.
The ravens will also have an important narrative role, representing companionship, memory, ancient knowledge, and omen.
The main artistic focus will be on atmosphere, emotional storytelling, composition, environment, and dramatic but restrained lighting rather than an action-heavy scene or a traditional monster illustration.

About The Course
Workshop Flow
My intention is to demonstrate the complete process from the initial idea to the finished illustration, including:
Brief & Narrative Context ( I prepared sample visuals from my previous work, check the file 03-flow-example )
→ References & Moodboard
→ Thumbnail Exploration
→ Character Exploration
→ Selected Composition
→ Rough Sketch
→ Refined Sketch
→ Value & Lighting
→ Color Block
→ Rendering
→ Final Polish
Because a fully rendered illustration normally takes much longer than the available live workshop time, I’m planning to use a checkpoint system.
I will prepare several working PSD stages in advance, for example:
01_Thumbnails02_Selected_Composition03_Rough_Sketch04_Refined_Sketch05_Value_Lighting06_Color_Block07_Developed_Painting08_Near_Final09_Final
During the workshop, I’ll work live on the important creative and technical decisions, then move to a prepared checkpoint when a stage would normally require a significant amount of additional production time.
